How To Paint Prep Your Home For Interior Painting

Checklist for Preparing Your Home for Interior Painting:

  1. Clearing and Protecting the Space
    • Clear the room as much as possible, do you wanna clear about 3 foot from the wall so you have area to work a common practice is to move everything to the center of the room so you can cover it with one piece of plastic.
    • Cover large furniture with drop cloths or plastic sheeting. For anything that is not able to move such as cabinets and countertops. If you’re going to be painting near them it’s best to mask them with tape and plastic so there’s no possibility of paint dripping onto them.
  2. Wall Cleaning
    • If the walls are dirty wipe them with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.
    • Use a mild detergent for areas with grease or heavy soiling.
    • Remove the light outlet and switch covers with a flat head screw driver.
  3. Fixing the Flaws
    • Inspect walls for cracks, holes, or imperfections.
    • Fill small defects in the middle of walls with spackling paste, seal cracks on edges of walls with caulking, use wood putty for any holes or gaps that is on hard wood trim, let it dry before moving to next step.
  4. Smoothing Surfaces
    • For smooth walls you may want to sand the walls lightly, especially where repairs have been made, sometimes it’s best to do this in between coats. If you know you’re gonna do multiple coats. For textured walls this step is not necessary.
    • Scuff any glossy surface you plan to paint to improve adhesion, or at the very least use a specialty primer designed for these surfaces.
  5. Taping for Precision
    • Apply painter’s tape along trim, windowsills, and door frames, or anywhere else that you want a perfectly straight line. Some of the newer more expensive tapes have an edge lock technology built-in to where you put the tape down. Then you use a wet cloth and rub it along one edge to activate the edge, locking property. Another alternative often used by professional painters is to use an extremely small amount of caulk, on the edge of the paint where you need a straight line and seal up that edge with the caulking.
  6. Priming for Perfection
    • Use primer for anything that has not been previously painted.
    • In some cases you may want to use a primer to help with blocking out the color from previous paints if you’re doing a drastic color change, if you do this ask the paint supplier to tint the primer as close to the paint color as possible to reduce the number of topcoats needed.
  7. Ventilation for Health and Efficiency
    • Open windows and use fans to maintain air circulation.
    • Ensure good ventilation, especially when using higher VOC paints.
  8. Organizing Painting Tools
    • Assemble all painting tools and materials beforehand.
    • Choose quality tools for better coverage and reduced splatter.
  9. Floor Protection
    • Cover floors thoroughly with drop cloths or builder’s paper.
    • If you use paper or plastic tape the edges to prevent slips or movement.
